CHIMNEY

This series emerged from my return to Portugal after fifteen years away, reflecting on the quiet villages and architectural forms of central Portugal and the profound impression they made on me upon seeing them again. Familiar structures, towers, rooftops, and churches became transformed through memory into something more celestial and otherworldly.

The buildings evolve into celestial towers and symbolic structures, suspended between the earthly and the astral. Doorways and openings suggest passages toward heaven, or toward an unknown plane capable of receiving the traveller. Architecture becomes less a place of habitation and more a threshold between worlds. At the same time, these structures function as beacons: points of light and orientation within an uncertain landscape, calling people toward them and offering a sense of gathering, belonging, and direction.

The series explores return, memory, belonging, and transcendence, transforming the humble architecture of Portuguese villages into imagined monuments that stand between earth and the cosmos, places from which one might find a way toward somewhere beyond the visible.
